Bird Protection: From Fragmented Data to a Personalized Donor Experience
Bird Protection Netherlands is dedicated to protecting wild birds and their habitats. To fulfill this vital mission, the organization relies heavily on personal contributions from members and donors. For this reason, gaining a deeper understanding of donors is essential to delivering highly relevant experiences and maintaining a lasting connection to their cause.
Together with Intouch365, Vogelbescherming built a data-driven foundation for fundraising and donor communication. Using Microsoft Fabric and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights, we unified fragmented donor data, memberships, transactions, and marketing campaigns into a single centralized platform. This powers large-scale campaign activations, such as the annual Garden Bird Count which features over 100,000 participants.

Vogelbescherming holds valuable data across various systems, online platforms, websites, and email tools. Consequently, marketers struggled to quickly and reliably identify who their donors are, understand their level of engagement, and track where they stand in the donor journey.
The challenge was clear: How do you truly put the donor at the center of your operations using clean, reliable, and actionable data? To deliver relevant communication to diverse target groups and different types of bird lovers, Vogelbescherming needed a single, unified donor profile. This profile serves as the foundation for sharper segmentation, personalized donor journeys, and more targeted fundraising campaigns.
Additionally, their desire to operate independently required an approach that went far beyond mere software implementation. Instead of becoming dependent on an external partner, the team wanted to take full control of the platform to drive future development internally.
A Practical Data Strategy as a Foundation

From Implementation to Ownership
Our collaboration with Vogelbescherming was built on a true partnership. Rather than maintaining a traditional client-vendor relationship, we worked hand in hand to build a platform that aligns with their goals, operational workflows, and long-term vision.
Intouch365 guided Vogelbescherming through designing the platform while ensuring they fully understood how to leverage it. By actively involving their teams in key decisions, system configuration, and feature exploration, we fostered a deep sense of internal ownership. As a result, Vogelbescherming can now easily run and independently develop the platform.

The Future.
Connecting with new target audiences alongside their existing member and donor base is vital for Vogelbescherming. Thanks to the new data architecture, they can now leverage next-best-offer and next-best-action models, determining the logical next step in each donor journey based on behavior, engagement levels, and specific donor needs.
This paves the way for deeper personalization, more relevant communication, and a donor experience that closely aligns with the personal, social commitment of every supporter.
